Are there plenty of mistakes to be made when you are parenting? You betcha! Can some of them be avoided? Totally! And I can help with at least one.

Biggest Cloth Diaper Mistake

There are two types of people.

One spends hours researching. Watching videos. Asking questions. Then timidly hits purchase now.

The other just googles cloth diapers. Hits the first link. And done!

Whether you are the first kind or second kind this will still be true. The BIGGEST mistake new to cloth diapers shoppers make is buying all one brand or style of cloth diaper before they’ve even used a single one.

No cloth diaper will work for every baby and you will find there are things you like and dislike.

Purchase or even rent a variety first. Use them. Wash them. See what happens. Then go ahead and get more of what you like. I personally did a newborn rental with my first. I got a variety to try out and was able to send them back when I was done and then get what I already knew what worked. Lots of stores have rentals or even 30 day trials that make this an easy option.

You wouldn’t stock up on a lifetime supply of one kind of shampoo and conditioner if you’d never tried it would you? Cloth diapers are no different than anything else.

Please take my word for it. Even if you’ve seen 1000 people say they love XYZ. There are another 1000 who you haven’t heard from that say they hate it. You don’t want to find out after the fact that something just doesn’t work for you and your baby and then have to either try to make it work or sell them at a loss.

You can find more info on our New to Cloth Diapers page as well as on our beginners site, Thinking About Cloth Diapers!

I’d love to hear about your experience when you were new! How did you make out when making those first few purchases?

Thanks for the series of articles for new moms, like me! I want very sure about using cloth diapers first. So when I came across Pocket diapers at greentikki.com. I started using them. They are very soft and my kid’s skin was free from rashes from that day on!

I used All About Cloth Diapers when my oldest (now 5) developed an allergy around 6mo to disposable diapers. If it weren’t for this site, I would have switched back to disposables because I was having so many issues with fit and cleaning. This site really helped me to understand how to cloth diaper. I have used the big book every year even after my kids potty trained because there are so many amazing deals for everyday household and personal needs! So glad I found this site and the big book!

This is a great place to learn all there is to know about cloth diapers and the care of them. There is no right or wrong way to cloth diaper. All in one's may work best for one child but flats may work best for another child. You will understand how to care for your cloth diapers so they last you. There is a wealth of information on various brands and wool as well. Highly recommend!
