Hey Autumn, I have loved reading your blog and it really helps me with preparing for my little one and standing up to all my cloth diaper hating friends and relatives. One thing though, I am very very brand new at this and this is my first baby, do you think you could go through some of your acronyms? I know CD is cloth diapering but I get confused at EFB and DD and all the other ones that I should probably know. Could you just explain the main ones that are used for those of us less “in the know”.

      DD= dear daughter

I know that ImseVimse also has covers for premies and are highly recommended. And Totsbots Teenyfits are just soooo adorable with their new prints.

Congrats Autumn! He’s beautiful! Do you have any suggestions for cloth diapering TINY newborns? I am due with twin girls and I expect them to be 5 lbs or less. Do you know of any preemie sizes either fitteds or prefolds and covers? Thanks for your time!

Lil’ Joeys and Mutts (www.littlefluffmonster.com). For covers, Proraps comes in preemie size (2-6lbs). I always buy several brands of covers and always use my Proraps almost exclusively. They are simple.

Congratulations Autumn!! What a little sweetie and how fun to see him in the video. Your blog is the best… it’s been SUCH a source of insight and comfort to me when I ventured into cloth diapering after the birth of my daughter five months ago. So far so good, your recommendations are spot on! Take care.

I have a question about Banana Peels- I saw your positive reviews and decided to give them a try. I placed an Order last Sunday and got back a confirmation email, my credit card was also charged. However, despite an email and phone call I have yet to hear back or receive a shipping notification. I just want to make sure they are still in business and see if I should give them more time or contact my credit card company. Also, I want to make sure others don’t lose any money if they have gone out of business. Thanks for all your help, i love your blog and have been using cloth for 6 months since I found it.

Congratulations from Canada! You and your baby look great! Makes me want to have another baby. I am glad you shared the diapers you are using but how many would you need to cloth diaper a newborn. With my last I was hesitant because I didn’t know what would work or how many I needed. Are the goodmamas AIOs?

Goodmamas are fitteds. I recommend 2 dozen at least. If you have someone helping you with laundry you might get by with 18 but that’s tight. Even if you didn’t have enough to cloth diaper full time at least you’d be able to do it some of the time…which is good, right? ;)

I do have a question. I cloth diapered pretty early on with this baby, and I did notice I was changing a LOT. Kind of difficult to be changing and washing so much when you are just numb from exhaustion. Do you have some extra help at home? But I’m even more curious about the meconium- how easily does that come out in the wash? Post meconium bowels are no big deal with breastfed babies, but that is sticky, sticky stuff. Thanks for your help and congratulations!

    • Autumn Beck says

      January 8, 2011 at 10:50 pm

I have never had a problem with meconium. I toss the diapers in the pail same as the yellow poo :) I don’t even have stains…but then again most of the first day diapers were dark colored inner fabric.

Yes, I do have a tremendous amount of help. My husband and 8yo daughter do all the laundry. This time I was blessed to have my mom here for a few days after Camden’s birth and she was a laundry fool! I could take a diaper off and it’d be washed before the end of the day lol. Was the baby you mention your first? I ask because there is a significant decrease in the number of days it takes to recover with subsequent children. Which is a blessing!

Actually this is baby four, the first in cloth. We really started with the cloth at 2 weeks, when the meconium was gone and the umbilical cord healed. I just noticed (especially during the fussy 2-6 week period) that I was changing diapers all the time. And sleep was scarce, it was just hard. But it was also brief (relatively). And now that she’s older- she still hates to be wet, but changing her diaper always results in a happy smiley girl- SO worth it.

Beautiful babe! I have only been reading your blog for the last week and a half when I started researching why my fuzzibunz are repelling and my daughter was not recovering from her awful diaper rash. Anyhoo, got the Bac-Out and am amazed!!! I stripped my diapers twice and then used the Bac-Out and what a difference. I also found out about buying special diapers/inserts for nighttime off your blog. For the past 8 1/2 months I have been using disposables at night because I just figured that cloth diapers don’t work for the heavy wetters, what did I know!? My question (when you have time) is I have the Fuzzibunz one size pocket diapers, would it work to do a hemp insert along with the microfiber insert for more absorbency overnight? If so, what hemp inserts would you suggest? I noticed Fuzzinbunz does make their own. Also, I have been reading a lot of the comments on the Sloomb diapers, but the wool covers are pretty pricey. What do you think? I don’t want to spend a lot, would like to use my fuzzibunz if I could through the night, but if I have to invest in a couple new diapers for overnight, I was thinking about the pooters. Thanks for taking the time to read my comment. Congrats, again!

Yes, hemp is great for nighttime cloth diapering. Check out the SuperDo 2G insert by Knickernappies. It is a hemp/microfiber insert. Or Babykicks hemp inserts to lay under your FB microfiber inserts. Pooters are excellent nighttime diapers. Sterling is asleep in one right now :)

Such a cutie! And you look great! I’m very curious about newborn diapering. With my little guy (now 8 months and not so little) we started at about 3 weeks with gdiapers but weren’t 100% CD until about 4 months when I bought a variety of diapers and found some that worked better for us. Next time around I want to start right away. How do Lil Joeys compare to Goodmanas? They look similar in style from the pictures but are a lot cheaper and don’t need a cover. I’ve learned with my husband the simpler the diaper the more willing he is to change so I think needing a cover is too many steps for him. Enjoy your little one (who shares a birthday with me)!

My little girl showed up early and is one month old today! So far CDing is hit and miss. She has such super skinny legs that even the nb proraps are big! She’s gained 1 1/2lbs, tho (7 1/2lbs today!) so they do at least fit better than when we first brought her home. There’s no secret tricks I’m missing to get them to fit better, is there? She’s wearing preemie prefolds snappied underneath. I have “infant” prefolds, too, but those are still gigantic.
    Congrats again! He’s super adorable!

Hi!! Thanks so much for sharing….only 3 days after birth
and already “back at work!” Wow. Well, I have a soon to be 1 yr.
old (on Jan. 22nd) and am due with our second sweetie on April
5th!! Because we didn’t start using cloth diapers until our first
one was 5 months old, I’m curious to know what the best, cheapest
route is for using cloth from day one! I’ve considered just using
prefolds with a cover from thirsties, but if you (or anyone else)
has any suggestions that would be great! Our 1 yr. old has been
using AIOs that I made from fabric a friend gave me (she gave up on
making them). However, not sure I have the time to make sized ones
for the new baby. Thanks and CONGRATULATIONS!!! Love reading your

He is beautiful! I will be cloth diapering a newborn for the first time with this one. I’m not sure if you had him circumcised but if so or if you know, how does that work with cloth? I have read that fleece liners work or that a lot of people just use sposies until it is all healed up, what do you suggest? I have a decent newborn stash and tend to have big babies so I am hoping to get to cd from birth. I will be following your blog for all my newborn diaper questions, thank you so much!!

We don’t circumcise. I would use fleece liners before I’d use disposables. Since you tend to have big babies, you’ll probably be able to skip all my newborn recs! Sterling was 9lb at birth and some newborn diapers are barely fitting him.
