It’s part of the curse. I’m sure of it. Yes, it’s natural. Yes, we’d all die if we didn’t do it. But STILL!
Sweat.
Is it ever pleasant? Does anyone actually sweat pretty?
Ok, maybe some of you sweat just enough to be healthy, but for those of us with the unenviable ability to literally “sweat buckets” I say hush it.
Obviously, I’m kidding. Well, not about the sweating abnormally but my poke at those who are normal.
So, what’s a girl to do? Or your husband for that matter? (I’m assuming that most of my readers are women)
First of all DON’T USE ANTIPERSPIRANTS!
Are you using an antiperspirant? Don’t know? Go check…. If you are, toss it now. Antiperspirants contain an aluminum-based compound that temporarily plugs the sweat ducts and prevents you from perspiring. It isn’t healthy to stop a function of the body designed to cleanse toxins and cool body temperature.
I encourage you to do your own research on the link between the use of antiperspirants and breast cancer, Alzheimer’s and kidney disease. Claims and studies abound but it really comes down to the basics– YOU NEED TO SWEAT. You don’t need to stink though!
FUN FACT: The antiperspirant phase of history began in the United States. The first trademarked deodorant was Mum in 1888, followed 15 years later by the first trademarked antiperspirant, Everdry. A solution of aluminum chloride dabbed on with a cotton swab, Everdry was cold, sticky, slow to dry, and so stinging and acidic that it ate through clothing. (Thank you, New York Times)
You checked and your stick, roll on or spray is not an antiperspirant. It’s a deodorant.
BUT you may still be using something not so great for you. Most mainstream deodorants contain an antibacterial agent (like triclosan) designed to kill the stinky bacteria in your armpit. Triclosan has been shown to alter hormone regulation, contribute to the development of antibiotic-resistant germs and be harmful to the immune system. No need to take that risk! There are many essential oils and extracts with antibacterial properties.
Thankfully many wahms have created businesses around their passion for natural products. One wahm that we already know and love ( Macaroni Baby cloth diaper review) has a new product that will keep our pits healthy and smellin’ good!
MB Natural Deodorant contains NO chemicals, NO aluminum, and NO parabens. Men and women can use it … and in this review you’ll see it’s also perfect for children!
When Tarah emailed me about a review I knew right away I wasn’t forwarding it on to my lovely assistant Jenn! Why?? Because we have kids old enough to need deodorant and there’s no way I would let them use anything unnatural on those precious pits!
The child who could have really put MB Natural Deodorant to the test is my 10 yo son Haven. But, being 10 and being a boy seems to mean that deodorant is completely optional…as is showering. He does shower when forced to and will wear deodorant when I remember for him. So, the review went to my 12 yo daughter Haley.
Haley sweats a lot and has tried many natural deodorants. For her it comes down to how long it keeps her from stinking. She also is pretty picky about the smell of the deodorant.
SCENT: Haley received the Lemonade scent. She says it reminds her of cleaner…I say it makes me think of CLEAN!! The scent isn’t overpowering but it’s strong enough to still be smelled an hour later. MB Natural Deodorant is available in several natural and pleasant scents. Here are a few options:
TEXTURE: It is very sticky and it will stick to your clothes. Haley finds this slightly annoying but manageable. The ingredients are Coconut Oil, Shea Butter, Arrowroot Powder, Sodium Bicarbonate, Beeswax, Essential Oils. From the photo below you can see that the stick is a soft solid. It’s not like store solids, it has more creaminess to it.
PERFORMANCE: Haley applies it after a shower either at night or in the morning. She only applies it once and doesn’t have a need to reapply throughout the day. Haley has also used Jason’s (purifying tea tree) which works really well but the scent made her smell funky (says the parents). PITS! didn’t work for her. (and about 5 other brands I randomly pick up from Sprout’s. none of which work for her.) MB Natural Deodorant keeps all odors away and best of all there is no lingering sweaty smell in her clothes. By sweaty smell I don’t mean ‘I’ve been working on the railroad all day and haven’t showered in a week’ smell. I mean that normal odor your clothes have if you sweat a lot.
DURABILITY: As the mom I can tell you that nothing makes you feel more sympathetic (and maybe a little embarrassed) than when your children stink to high heaven out in public. It’s not a good thing. The odor preventing power in this little stick is mighty!
OVERALL: Haley has asked me to order more! She says that despite the stickiness it works better than all the deodorants she has tried. I can fully attest to the effectiveness of MB Natural Deodorant. I am so happy that my daughter doesn’t have to worry about smelling anymore!
How long did it take you to finally find a natural deodorant that works for YOU??

I have been using Primal Pit Paste for a while now and love it. Works great for me, still sweat but no smell from bacteria. No stains on clothes and only apply once daily. Love it. I have bought it for both my daughters, don’t want them to have all those risks from the antiperspirant

Magnesium oil in a spray bottle works really well and also is a great way to absorb magnesium.

I make my own deodorant with many of the same ingredients. I let it melt into my skin for a minute or two. I take a tissue and blot off any excess. Then I use a powder puff with arrowroot on it which helps absorb a bit of the moisture and keep the oils off of my clothes. It might help with the sticky feeling.

Although I haven’t had any luck with crystal deodorants, I have had a lot of luck with the kind where the crystals are already dissolved in water. I have used tie Crystal spray deodorant from Amazon, but find that an even more effective version (in that it takes only two applications of three sprays apiece per armpit to keep me smiling fresh, versus five to seven) is Lafes Organic Just For Mom Deodorant Spray, which comes in at BPA-free spray bottle.

This formula looks similar to my two favorite brands of natural deodorant: Vermont Soap Works Sage Lime (smells amazing) and Primal Pit Paste in various scents. I agree that some of them can smell like house cleaner (like the Primal Pit Paste Thyme Lemongrass) but Primal Pit Paste also has Orange Creamsicle which your daughter might just LOVE. If she’s really looking for a yummy scent, try Tom’s in Apricot. It might not last as long depending on what you’re doing that day but the scent is heavenly.
I’ll definitely check out this MB one!
